Atletico Madrid’s hopes of lifting the Copa del Rey title were dashed as Real Sociedad emerged victorious, denying Ademola Lookman his first trophy with the club.

Atletico Madrid winger, Ademola Lookman, found the back of the net as they lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad on Saturday night.

Lookman made it 1-1 in the first half, after Ander Barrenetxea put Sociedad in front in the opening minute.

It was the Nigerian’s third goal in the competition and his seventh across all competitions.

Atletico had to come from behind twice to level the game, with Julian Alvarez cancelling out Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty.

The final went to penalties after extra time, where Sociedad goalkeeper Unai Marrero saved the first two spot-kicks to give his side the advantage.

Sociedad have now won the Copa del Rey for the fourth time in their history.

Atletico’s only remaining chance of silverware this season now lies in the UEFA Champions League, where they face Arsenal in the semi-final.

The defeat means the Nigerian forward will have to wait longer for his first major trophy with the Spanish giants, despite showing promise during the season.

Atletico, meanwhile, will now shift focus to their remaining fixtures in the league and European competitions as they look to salvage their season.
