REAL MADRID HELD BY GIRONA AS TITLE HOPES SUFFER BLOW
Agency Report

Real Madrid dropped crucial points in the La Liga title race after a 1-1 draw against Girona FC at the Santiago Bernabéu on Friday.
Midfielder Federico Valverde gave Madrid the lead early in the second half with a powerful strike, but Thomas Lemar equalised with a superb long-range effort to secure a point for the visitors.
The result leaves Madrid six points behind La Liga leaders FC Barcelona, who could extend their advantage to nine points if they defeat local rivals Espanyol.
Madrid’s frustration was compounded by a controversial moment late in the game when a penalty appeal was waved away after Girona defender Vitor Reis appeared to catch Kylian Mbappé in the face inside the box. Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa criticised the decision, expressing disbelief over the lack of VAR intervention.
Arbeloa admitted his side fell short of expectations, describing it as a match they should have won despite not producing their best performance. The draw extends Madrid’s winless run to three matches in all competitions.
Jude Bellingham made his first start since January and impressed, while goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made key saves to keep Madrid in the game during the first half. Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga also delivered a standout performance, denying several Madrid chances.
Despite dominating large spells, Madrid failed to extend their lead after Valverde’s goal, with Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior both missing opportunities to seal the win.
Girona capitalised on the missed chances, with Lemar’s precise strike from outside the box beating Lunin to level the score.
Attention now shifts to the UEFA Champions League, where Madrid travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their quarter-final, trailing 2-1 from the first leg.
With only seven La Liga matches remaining, Madrid face an uphill battle to catch Barcelona, making their European campaign increasingly crucial to their hopes of silverware this season.
