Ademola Adeleke has called on the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, to play an active role in driving national development.

The appeal was made during the inauguration of the association’s new executives at the Osun State College of Health Technology in Ilesa. Represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Abiodun Ojo, the governor encouraged the student leaders to embrace leadership responsibilities now rather than waiting for future opportunities.

He also stressed the need for gender inclusivity, urging the incorporation of more women into the student leadership structure to ensure balanced representation. Adeleke further cautioned the new executives against sacrificing their future for financial gains, advising them to remain focused on initiatives that foster both personal growth and national progress.

Reaffirming his administration’s support for students, he described them as “leaders of today” and urged them to engage in activities that would positively impact the country.

In his keynote address, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the college, Abayomi Adegoke, charged the student leaders to live up to their responsibilities, noting that student unionism is a vital platform for grooming future national leaders. He also encouraged tertiary institutions, particularly in the South-West, to support vibrant student union activities.

Adegoke advised the students to adopt constructive dialogue over confrontation when engaging with government, emphasizing solution-driven advocacy.

Meanwhile, the NANS Zone D Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, pledged to prioritize student welfare and called for cooperation among members.

At a related event, Taiwo Olaiya, Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic Ede, was named a patron of NANS South-West Zone. The Rector, Sani Man Yahaya, was also recognized for approving the pardon of students expelled over their involvement in a violent protest on campus in May 2024.
