AKWA IBOM POLICE RECOVER EXPLOSIVES, BEGIN INVESTIGATION INTO SECURITY THREAT

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has discovered and safely defused explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre following a joint security operation.
The development was confirmed on Monday in Uyo by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, who said the operation prevented what could have been a major disaster at the facility.
According to her, the success of the operation stemmed from credible intelligence provided by correctional officials about suspicious objects spotted within the custodial centre.
Following the alert, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, directed the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.

DSP John explained that a coordinated search operation carried out by the command led to the recovery of two 90mm high-explosive rounds, a 45cm burning fuse, a pair of pincers, a flat-head screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a 6cm conduit iron pipe.
She noted that the EOD team successfully rendered the explosives harmless, eliminating any immediate danger and preventing possible loss of lives as well as damage to critical infrastructure.
The police spokesperson added that security around the correctional facility and surrounding areas had since been strengthened through tighter surveillance, stricter access control, and continuous patrols aimed at preventing further threats.
She also disclosed that investigations and technical analysis were ongoing to determine the source of the explosives and identify those responsible for the act.
DSP John assured residents that the situation had been fully contained and confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the operation. She urged the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities in their communities to the nearest police station.
She further warned criminal elements that the command would not tolerate actions capable of threatening public safety or targeting critical institutions, reaffirming the police command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
