OBI, KWANKWASO WILL JOIN NDC NEXT WEEK SAYS KWANKWASIYA MOVEMENT

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano, is set to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week, according to the Kwankwasiyya movement. Habibu Mohammed, who represents the movement, shared with the media on Friday night that the decision was finalized after all involved parties gave their full support.
Mohammed said discussions with the NDC have reached “about 90 percent”, with only minor issues left to tidy up, adding that the former governor and Peter Obi, 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will move to the NDC on Monday or Tuesday.
“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” Mohammed said.
“The stakeholders have unanimously given him the go-ahead to move to the NDC,” he said. Kwankwaso, he added, is currently in Kano and is expected back in Abuja by Sunday ahead of the planned defection.
On Thursday, the supreme court overturned a controversial order that kept the status quo from the time before the legal battle in the ADC leadership dispute and sent the case back to the federal high court to be decided again — essentially starting the contest over without solving the issue.
Mohammed said the top court‘s decision only made people more worried about the uncertainty inside the party.
“Looking at the case being sent back to the lower court, it might take a while.
There could even be another appeal to the supreme court. It doesn’t seem likely that things will stay the same,” Mohammed said.
“Staying in ADC at this stage would amount to waiting for Godot,” he said.
Mohammed said the movement also considered internal dynamics within ADC, including the reluctance among key actors to support a consensus candidate.
Since the All Opposition Political Party Leaders summit in Ibadan, Oyo state, late last month, Obi has not attended any subsequent ADC meetings.
In April, supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso started the “OK Movement” to bring people together and support both politicians running as a team in the next elections.
The leaders of the movement said that Obi and Kwankwaso approved the idea.
