OGBEIDE-IHAMA SEEKS MERIT-BASED APC SENATE TICKET IN EDO SOUTH

By: Balogun Ibrahim
Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, an aspirant for the Edo South Senate seat under the All Progressives Congress, on Saturday urged party leaders to award the ticket based on merit rather than favoritism.
Speaking in Benin City during a visit to the Edo South senatorial leadership to formally declare his ambition, Ogbeide-Ihama said all aspirants were capable but argued that his experience as a two-term member of the House of Representatives made him the best candidate for the position.
He stressed that the Senate seat required someone with experience rather than a newcomer learning on the job.
The former lawmaker also addressed rumours that he had sought the support of Nyesom Wike to secure the party’s ticket. According to him, there was nothing wrong with seeking assistance, noting that everyone needs support and that he would welcome any backing capable of helping him secure the nomination.

Reflecting on his past political experiences while in the Peoples Democratic Party, Ogbeide-Ihama recalled that his campaign billboards were repeatedly destroyed, yet he still won elections. He added that contesting under the APC should be easier since he now belongs to the ruling party.
He further appealed to party leaders to recognise the growing role of young people in politics, arguing that his youthfulness, energy, and strength positioned him to effectively represent the seven local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District.
Highlighting his past achievements, he said he had installed street lights and provided vehicles to support constituents, promising to expand such initiatives across the district if elected.
Earlier, former Edo State deputy governor Pius Odubu described the contest as a family affair, noting that although several aspirants were in the race, only one candidate would emerge. He also urged Ogbeide-Ihama to conduct his campaign peacefully.
