Oleksandr Usyk has thrown his support behind Anthony Joshua in a potential all-British heavyweight clash against Tyson Fury, while revealing he has been actively involved in helping Joshua prepare mentally and tactically.

Joshua is scheduled to return to the ring on July 25 in Riyadh against Kristian Prenga, with a highly anticipated fight against Fury expected to follow later in the year. In recent months, he has trained alongside Usyk in Spain and Ukraine, strengthening their professional relationship.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Usyk expressed confidence in Joshua’s chances, saying he believes the former champion can defeat Fury if he maintains his current progress.

He described Fury as a “dangerous and exceptional fighter,” but said Joshua’s work ethic and transformation impressed him. Usyk also stated that while he respects both fighters, he personally hopes Joshua wins, adding that he “deserves it.”

Usyk, who has previously defeated both Joshua and Fury, said he does not expect Joshua’s next fight to pose major difficulty, calling it “like official sparring.” Instead, he said their focus has been on preparing for Fury’s distinct fighting style.

He revealed that their training discussions have included strategy, boxing skills, and psychological preparation, encouraging Joshua to stay focused and resilient.

The Ukrainian boxer is currently preparing for his own title defence against Rico Verhoeven on May 23 in Egypt, but confirmed he will continue supporting Joshua ahead of his future bouts.

Joshua’s last fight was a victory over Jake Paul in December, after which he took a break following the tragic loss of two close friends in a car accident.

Usyk said he could relate to Joshua’s emotional struggle, drawing parallels with his own experiences during the ongoing war in Ukraine. He urged Joshua to see his opportunity as a second chance and to remain committed, offering continued support and encouragement.
