AKPABIO URGES SOUTH EAST TO SUSTAIN PEACE, SHUN ARMED STRUGGLE

By: Balogun Ibrahim
Godswill Akpabio has called on people of the South East to uphold peace and guide young people away from armed struggle against the Nigerian government, stressing that development can only thrive in a stable environment.
Akpabio made the appeal at the weekend during the funeral of former Administrative Secretary of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (OMPADEC), Sir Albert Nnamani, held in his hometown of Ikem, Enugu State.
In a statement issued by his media office, the Senate President urged the people of the region, particularly elders, to properly mentor the youth and discourage actions that could destabilise the country.
He warned that attempts to seek power or self-determination through violent means would not succeed, noting that state authority remains stronger than armed resistance.
Akpabio also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s willingness to consider legislative measures that could address long-standing regional concerns, including the creation of an additional state for the South East to promote fairness and balance across the country.

He said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was committed to correcting past injustices and ensuring more inclusive governance, particularly in appointments and representation.
According to him, such issues must be resolved through dialogue and negotiation rather than confrontation.
The Senate President further cautioned against youth involvement in disruptive activities, including sit-at-home orders, which he said have negatively affected the economy of the South East, especially commercial hubs like Onitsha.
He recalled the post-civil war era, noting what he described as lingering economic and infrastructural disparities in the region, while calling for renewed national reconciliation and equitable development.
Akpabio also paid tribute to the late Sir Albert Nnamani, describing him as a disciplined and impactful administrator who contributed significantly to the development of the Niger Delta during his time at OMPADEC.
