The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has restated the agency’s dedication to proactive disaster management, with an emphasis on stronger collaboration with key stakeholders nationwide.

She made this known while receiving a delegation from the Simulation and Crisis Management Directorate of the Department of State Services (DSS) during a working visit to NEMA headquarters in Abuja.

Umar said the agency is stepping up efforts to enhance risk reduction and strengthen community resilience through early warning systems, preparedness initiatives, and coordinated response strategies.

“We remain focused on advancing a proactive and risk-informed approach to disaster management, with emphasis on early warning dissemination, preparedness, mitigation, and coordinated response to emerging threats,” she stated.

She explained that following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NEMA has activated measures aimed at reducing the expected impact of flooding during the rainy season.

According to her, the agency has increased stakeholder engagement, convened technical coordination meetings, and begun sensitisation campaigns targeting state governments and vulnerable communities.

Umar further assured the visiting DSS delegation of NEMA’s readiness to deepen collaboration in disaster preparedness, simulation exercises, and emergency response operations, adding, “We are ready to continue working closely to enhance coordinated emergency response across the country.”

The Acting Assistant Director General of the Directorate, Safiya Yusuf, said the visit was intended to strengthen institutional cooperation and improve national crisis response systems.

She added that the Directorate supports emergency operations before, during, and after disasters, and remains committed to working with NEMA to enhance preparedness across the country.
