Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane has insisted the club still has “foundations for success” despite growing criticism following a poor run of Premier League results.

The comments come after Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher described Chelsea as a “broken club” following their sixth consecutive league defeat, a 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Monday.

The result has left Chelsea sitting ninth in the table, with their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League looking increasingly unlikely.

McFarlane, who stepped in after Liam Rosenior was dismissed last month, defended the team’s direction ahead of Saturday’s clash with Liverpool, saying he respects Carragher’s opinion but remains confident in the squad’s potential.

He said there are still strong building blocks within the team that can lead to future success, even if current performances are below expectations.

While acknowledging the difficult run of form, McFarlane rejected suggestions that the players had lost motivation, stressing that they remain committed in training and preparation.

He pointed to the recent win over Leeds, which secured a place in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, as evidence that the team is capable of improvement, although they have been unable to build on that momentum.

The interim coach added that the squad is working hard daily and remains in a good condition mentally, but has struggled to consistently translate training performances into match results.

McFarlane also confirmed that teenager Jesse Derry will miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious head injury in the defeat to Nottingham Forest, although he said early signs regarding his recovery are positive.
