Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged young Nigerians to remain patriotic and actively participate in building the nation, stressing that peace and credible elections are essential for national development.
Speaking at his office in Abuja, Jonathan commended the youths for showing interest in the country’s future, noting that patriotic citizens contribute to nation-building, while unpatriotic ones only seek personal gain and abandon the country.
He emphasised that peace remains the most important factor Nigeria needs to progress and called on young people to continue advocating for peaceful and credible elections.
According to him, credible elections would encourage more competent citizens to participate in politics and strengthen democracy in the country.
Jonathan also urged youths to become more involved in the electoral process, particularly by obtaining their voter cards and exercising their right to vote.
Drawing from his experience observing elections in more than 14 African countries and parts of Southeast Asia, the former president lamented Nigeria’s low voter turnout, describing it as one of the worst he had seen globally.
He said voter apathy in Nigeria remains alarmingly high and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the causes and find lasting solutions.
Jonathan, while responding to calls for him to contest future elections, said presidential politics is not a “computer game,” adding that he would consult widely before making any decision.
He further stressed the need for Nigeria’s leaders to plan for future generations, noting that developed countries attained their current status through consistent long-term planning by successive leaders.
According to him, Nigeria must put an end to the cycle of passing problems from one generation to another and begin laying a solid foundation for the future.
