The Ekiti State Government has sealed a popular eatery in Ado Ekiti for allegedly violating environmental sanitation regulations.

The enforcement action was carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources during an inspection exercise aimed at tackling environmental pollution and persistent odour nuisance in parts of the state capital.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to address sanitation breaches and improve environmental conditions across Ado Ekiti.

Leading the inspection team, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, said the exercise covered the Federal Polytechnic Satellite Campus Junction and other areas within the capital city.

According to her, the affected eatery was sealed after preliminary investigations allegedly revealed that waste from the facility was being stored in an underground septic tank and discharged into nearby drainage channels at night.

“The practice was capable of causing environmental pollution and contributing to the offensive odour being experienced in parts of the state capital,” she said.

Aluko-Ajisafe also disclosed that another eatery in the area was reprimanded for operating under unsanitary conditions and directed to immediately comply with environmental health standards to avoid further sanctions.

The commissioner warned residents and business owners against indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental practices capable of endangering public health, stressing that the government would continue strict enforcement of environmental laws against offenders.

As part of the exercise, the ministry’s team also inspected a gas plant before proceeding to Oja Bisi Market, where traders were advised to maintain cleanliness and avoid displaying goods on walkways.

Aluko-Ajisafe urged residents to report suspicious environmental activities capable of causing pollution or posing public health risks within their communities.

She reiterated the state government’s commitment to sustained environmental monitoring, enforcement and sanitation reforms aimed at ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment across Ekiti State.

The commissioner also appealed to residents to cooperate with enforcement agencies and allow due process in handling cases involving environmental offenders.
