Hoodlums suspected to be herdsmen on Wednesday night attacked Eziobodo, the host community of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), in Imo State, leaving one person injured by gunfire and several others wounded.

A source in the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers stormed the area in a failed bid to abduct residents, sparking panic and forcing many to flee their homes.

The source added that the incident triggered widespread apprehension in both Eziobodo and neighbouring Ihiagwa communities, with residents reportedly abandoning their homes over fears of further attacks.

The latest violence comes about three weeks after suspected gunmen in the area killed a motorcyclist and abducted his passenger, heightening insecurity concerns in the axis.

Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said security has been reinforced in the affected communities.

According to him, the attack occurred on the night of May 13, 2026, along the Umuokwo Ihiagwa/Eziobodo Road, where armed men attempted to abduct a victim but were resisted by a joint response from police operatives, local vigilantes, and community members.

He said the prompt intervention foiled the abduction attempt, though the victim sustained a gunshot injury and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Okoye added that the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has deployed the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit alongside other tactical teams to the area to strengthen security and track down the attackers.
