Personnel of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued an unidentified elderly man who collapsed close to Dozzy Filling Station along the Onitsha–Owerri Road in the Okpoko area of the state.

The incident briefly disrupted the flow of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the busy highway, as passersby gathered at the scene out of curiosity.

Reports indicate that the man lay by the roadside until police officers from the Anambra State Command arrived and quickly transported him to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

A shop owner in the area, who witnessed the event, said many people were reluctant to approach the man due to uncertainty about what caused his collapse. He added that some residents suspected he may have been under the influence of an unknown substance.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that officers from the Okpoko Division, while on routine patrol, discovered the unconscious man and immediately rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Ikenga appealed to members of the public or anyone who recognizes the man to come forward and report to the Okpoko Police Division or any nearby station.

He said, “The Anambra State Police Command has continued to demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and showing compassion to members of the public.

“This follows the rescue of an unconscious male pedestrian beside Dozzy Filling Station along the Onitsha/Owerri Road, Okpoko.

“Police operatives attached to Okpoko Division, while on routine patrol, found the yet-to-be-identified aged man lying unconscious and immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

“The Command is concerned about the condition of the victim and urges members of the public who may have useful information regarding his identity, family, or residence to report to the Okpoko Police Division or contact the Command for necessary action.”

In a related development, the command also kept its promise made during the National Police Day celebrations by covering the second-term school fees of five high-performing pupils in their respective classes.

According to Ikenga, the initiative is intended to encourage academic excellence, support education, and contribute to nation-building within Anambra State.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed that the police remain committed not only to maintaining law and order but also to implementing initiatives that positively affect the lives of residents, especially young people.

He further stated that the Command will continue to roll out community-focused programmes aimed at strengthening trust, promoting compassion, and fostering development across the state.
