Members of the Islamic Movement In Nigeria and the Nigeria police clash in Abuja on Monday leaving a Superintendent of Police with a gunshot. Leader of the IMN Ibrahim El-Zakzaky was expected at the Federal High Court today but was not brought to the court.
His supporters had gathered around the court in the Federal Secretariat area matching round and chanting solidarity songs. The situation suddenly degenerated to a fracas between members of the IMN and the police.
A police officer identified as SP Ogah was hit by a bullet from an unknown shooter. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was quickly referred to a tertiary health institution because of the severity of the case.
No one can confirm who fired the shot as the protesters were not carrying arms. Stones and sticks were used to smash the police patrol van attached to the Federal Secretariat by the protesters.
It took reinforcement by the police to put the situation under control, while the protesters were dispersed with tear-gas. The IMN has sustained protests against the continued detention of their leader El zakzakay in the last two months calling on government to release the Islamic leader unconditionally.
