AGRICULTURE: BANGLADESH ADVISES NIGERIA TO INVEST IN SEED VARIETIES THAT CAN WITHSTAND FLOOD
-By: Joseph
Nigeria has been advised to invest in research and technology driven
agriculture in order to overcome challenges caused by flooding.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shameem Ashan, gave the
advice during his visit to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development in Abuja.
Shameem, who said Nigeria should take a cue from his country, revealed
that Bangladesh had earlier been faced with climate change issues,
making it vulnerable as some other countries, but they delved into
agric technology and research to surmount some of the challenges. He
said this development made his country to be self sufficient in food
production.
“These seed varieties can withstand water logging and produce well”, he said.
Responding to the Bangladesh Envoy, Nigeria’s Minister for Agriculture
and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri said, Nigeria is
ready to employ the same method in order to boost food security and
mitigate farmers’ losses in the sector. He also described Bangladesh’s
achievement as “a silent revolution in agriculture”.
