AAUA ASUU DECLARES INDEFINITE STRIKE OVER 2025 AGREEMENT, SALARY ARREARS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko branch, has declared a total and indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the union.
The branch Chairman, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Akure, Ondo State.
The fresh industrial action came barely a week after the union suspended an earlier strike over unpaid salary backlogs following the payment of outstanding arrears.
Oshodi said the union had made several attempts to engage the Ondo State Government through letters and requests for meetings, but alleged that the government had failed to take concrete steps towards implementing the agreement.
He said ASUU members would not return to the lecture rooms based solely on promises or assurances from the government.
“The union has just declared an indefinite, total, and comprehensive strike over the non-implementation of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/ASUU 2025 agreement.
“The resolution is that if that agreement is not implemented here, and the arrears from January are not paid, we are not going to resume. We are not ready to listen to anything like commitment again. What we want now is action,” Oshodi said.
The union chairman expressed concern over what he described as the state government’s reluctance to implement the agreement, noting that some other states had already commenced implementation.
He questioned why Ondo State should be different, despite being an oil-producing state.
Oshodi, however, said the union remained open to dialogue with the government but insisted that implementation of the agreement and payment of outstanding arrears must precede any resumption of academic activities.
“The union is always open, but the truth of the matter is that the implementation must commence, and the arrears from January to date must be paid,” he said.
The 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement includes an upgraded salary structure, a 40 per cent review for academic staff and the payment of accumulated salary arrears.
The development comes a day after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Imo State University, Owerri branch, also declared an indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the Imo State Government and the university management to implement an agreement on improved welfare and conditions of service for academic staff.
