ABIA PDP CANDIDATE VOWS TO BOOST FOOD PRODUCTION, REDUCE FOOD PRICES

By ‘Balogun Ibrahim
The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr Kelechi Anosike, has pledged to attract investments into the agricultural sector to tackle the rising cost of living in the state.
Anosike, who described Abia as one of the most expensive states to live in, attributed the situation to what he called inadequate investment in agriculture by the incumbent administration.
He made the pledge while receiving a delegation of former students of Comprehensive Secondary School, Okoko-Ikom, in Bende Local Government Area, who visited him at his office in Umuahia to express their support.

The PDP candidate said he would prioritise agriculture and increase investment in food production if elected governor, with the aim of making essential commodities more affordable for residents.
He expressed concern that despite Abia’s fertile land, the state continued to rely heavily on neighbouring states for food supplies.
“Abia remains one of the most expensive states to live in because the government has done little or nothing in agriculture. Daily, heavy trailers bring goods from other states to Abia even though we have fertile land,” he said.
Anosike added that farmers in the state had not received adequate support and encouragement, noting that increased investment in agriculture would boost food production, improve availability and ease the financial pressure on residents.
He also questioned the extent to which residents had benefited from increased federal allocations to states following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
According to him, Abia’s monthly allocation, which previously stood between N3bn and N4bn, had risen to as much as N40bn, yet residents continued to struggle with the rising cost of living.
The governorship candidate also promised to consider the delegation’s request for the renovation of their alma mater.
Earlier, the delegation’s leader, Mr Harold Onyeukwu, said they visited Anosike to identify with him as a former student of the institution.
He appealed to the PDP candidate to renovate and fence the school, as well as provide library and laboratory facilities if elected governor.
Onyeukwu noted that the values instilled in them during their time at the school had continued to influence their lives.
Also speaking, the Abia State PDP chairman and deputy governorship candidate, Elder Abraham Amah, praised the delegation for supporting one of their own.
Amah described Anosike’s emergence as a major turning point for the party in the state, saying it had restored hope among its members.
“God prepares a man before his manifestation. What we are seeing is the manifestation of God. PDP was almost gone in the state, but his emergence revived the party,” he said.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Abia PDP Governorship Campaign Council, Amb Empire Kanu, said Anosike’s development blueprint for the state reflected the vision of the late Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Dr Michael Okpara.
