Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday addressed the possibility of being assassinated, amid growing fears of renewed military strikes by the United States.

His remarks came a day after the US carried out limited strikes in the Strait of Hormuz and on Qeshm Island, following reports that Iranian forces had fired at an American aircraft.

Pezeshkian maintained that a return to hostilities would benefit “no one”, reaffirming Tehran’s willingness to resolve the conflict through dialogue, negotiations and non-coercive measures.

However, he insisted that the Iranian people remained resolute despite mounting military and economic pressure, as the country grapples with inflation nearing 90 per cent, a weakening currency and declining oil exports.

“Let them assassinate me,” the President said. “Even if they assassinate thousands of people like me, the enemy will not be able to do a damn thing.”

He also said Iran was prepared to ration gas and electricity in some areas to prioritise supplies to production facilities and keep them operational.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have insisted that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until Washington meets Tehran’s demands, including lifting naval blockades, easing oil sanctions and halting military operations.

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the US military was preparing for a possible strike on Iran, which could take place this week following the midterm elections.
