ABUJA FILLING STATION BLAZE INJURES THREE FIREFIGHTERS, DAMAGES FIRS BUILDING

Three firefighters sustained varying degrees of injuries while battling the massive fire that erupted Thursday night at the AYM Shafa filling station in Area 3, Garki, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service has confirmed.
The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Muhammad, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday that the incident occurred after a petrol-laden tanker exploded at the filling station.
According to him, the FCT Fire Service received a distress call at about 9:44 p.m. and immediately deployed firefighters and equipment to the scene.
Due to the scale of the fire, other emergency response agencies joined the operation in a coordinated effort to contain the blaze.
Muhammad said three firefighters were injured during the operation, with one currently in intensive care at the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja, while the other two are receiving treatment at Alliance Hospital in Area 11, Garki.
He added that the cause of the fire is still under investigation and urged the public to avoid speculation until the official findings are released.
The spokesman commended the support of other emergency agencies, security personnel and members of the public, noting that their collaboration helped prevent a more devastating outcome. He also praised the courage and professionalism of the responding firefighters and emergency workers.
A preliminary assessment showed that the fire destroyed a fuel tanker carrying about 45,000 litres of petrol and damaged parts of the filling station and nearby structures.
Muhammad disclosed that 13 fuel dispensing pumps were located within the facility, with three directly affected by the fire. Two vehicles were also completely burnt.
He added that sections of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office and parts of the adjoining two-storey Ahmad Plaza commercial building also suffered damage.
The fire service urged operators of filling stations and other commercial facilities to comply strictly with fire safety regulations, maintain fire protection systems regularly and report emergencies promptly through the appropriate channels.
The Director of the FCT Fire Service, Adebayo Zacchaeus, expressed concern over the injured firefighters and appealed to the public to keep them in their prayers as they receive medical treatment.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through rapid emergency response, public awareness and strict enforcement of fire safety standards.
The firefighting operation was supervised by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel, alongside the FCT Fire Service Director and other emergency response officials.
