Political leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s North-Central region have commenced grassroots mobilisation aimed at securing support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The initiative, known as the North-Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement for Tinubu/Shettima 2027, was inaugurated on Friday at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in Abuja.
Among those involved in the mobilisation effort are Akume, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and the movement’s National Coordinator, Arc. Sonny Echono.
Speaking at the meeting, Akume said the primary objective of the movement was to canvass support for Tinubu and mobilise a massive voter turnout for the President in the 2027 election.
He added that the North-Central region had set a target of delivering the highest regional vote total for Tinubu.
Governor Sule described the initiative as timely and necessary, expressing confidence in the region’s ability to record a strong performance for the APC.
According to him, challenges ahead of the 2027 election were gradually receding, while the latest voter register, in his assessment, showed strong support for the APC in the North-Central.
Sule also said the region would leverage its political structures to take the party’s message to grassroots communities and mobilise support for Tinubu and other APC candidates.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Idris described the movement as the first of its kind and pledged that the necessary structures would be put in place to support its activities ahead of the election.
Echono, the movement’s national coordinator, said the focus was no longer merely on whether Tinubu would win the North-Central, but on positioning the region to contribute the highest number of votes to his presidential bid.
The stakeholders also resolved to intensify grassroots mobilisation, organise a grand rally in Lafia, Nasarawa State, hold town hall meetings and establish a reconciliation committee to address internal grievances within the APC across the region.
Nigeria’s 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
