Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi ended his Premier League goal drought on Saturday, scoring as Coventry City secured a 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The Nigerian forward netted his first Premier League goal of the 2026/27 campaign in the 37th minute, doubling Coventry’s advantage after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
Awoniyi, who had endured a difficult start to the season, previously scored once in the EFL Cup. He was substituted in the 72nd minute after giving Sunderland’s defence plenty of problems.
Jack Rudoni extended Coventry’s lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute, putting Frank Lampard’s men firmly in control of the encounter.
Sunderland, managed by Régis Le Bris, pulled one back through Enzo Le Fée, who converted a penalty in the 67th minute following a VAR review.
The visitors’ hopes of mounting a comeback suffered another setback in the 99th minute when defender Omar Alderete received his second yellow card and was sent off.
The victory earned Coventry three crucial points in their battle for Premier League survival, while Awoniyi’s goal marked a welcome return to scoring form.
