Former France international Thierry Henry has defended his interactions with Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal and presenter Kate Scott during the Ballon d’Or ceremony, insisting that he had no intention of disrespecting either of them.

Henry, who co-hosted the event with Scott, addressed the controversies in a video shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday, a day after the ceremony took place in London, United Kingdom.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona striker faced criticism over two separate exchanges during the ceremony. His question to Yamal about winning the Kopa Trophy and a joke involving Scott sparked heated discussions on social media.

While some viewers accused Henry of embarrassing the Barcelona teenager and disrespecting his co-presenter, others defended his actions, describing the exchanges as harmless humour that had been taken out of context.

The first controversy arose after Yamal won the Kopa Trophy for the third consecutive time, extending his record as the award’s most successful recipient. The prize recognises the best young player in world football.

Despite the achievement, the 18-year-old missed out on the Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award.

Henry drew attention to the distinction when he asked Yamal whether the Kopa Trophy was the award he had really wanted, a remark that many interpreted as highlighting his failure to win the main prize.

The question attracted mixed reactions online, with critics arguing that it put the teenager in an uncomfortable position and diminished the significance of his achievement.

Others, however, considered the exchange light-hearted banter between two football figures, noting that Henry was simply acknowledging the importance of the Ballon d’Or.

Responding to the backlash, Henry said he was not attempting to undermine Yamal’s confidence or belittle his achievement, stressing that he was a fan of the Barcelona forward.

“I’m a big fan of Lamine Yamal. I wasn’t trying to check his ego whatsoever. If you didn’t like the joke, I understand,” he said.

Explaining his remarks, the former Barcelona striker said he asked the question because the announcement of the Ballon d’Or winner was still pending at the time.

“I was simply asking if that was the trophy he really wanted because I knew the real prize was coming later,” Henry added.

He further expressed his admiration for Yamal, describing the teenager as one of the players he particularly enjoys watching.

“He’s actually one of those players I would pay to watch. I love him,” he said.

Henry also addressed the second controversy, which occurred during the presentation of the Socrates Award, named after the late Brazilian football legend.

The incident involved a joke about the pronunciation of Socrates’ name, with some viewers interpreting Henry’s response to Scott as dismissive and disrespectful.

The exchange prompted further criticism of Henry’s conduct on stage, although others maintained that it was a shared joke between the two presenters.

Rejecting claims that he had disrespected Scott, Henry insisted that his co-host was aware of the joke and had deliberately participated in the exchange.

“Kate was in on the joke with me, and you can ask Kate, by the way. She did it on purpose to say Socrates,” he said.

The former France captain expressed frustration over the criticism, emphasising that he would never intentionally undermine his co-presenter.

“Please stop saying I disrespected Kate. I will never do that,” Henry added.

He acknowledged that some viewers might not have found the exchanges amusing but urged them not to interpret his remarks as deliberately offensive.

Henry’s response comes amid ongoing debate over the incidents, with opinions divided on whether the exchanges were inappropriate or simply jokes that some viewers misunderstood.
