Nigerian singer and music executive Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has opened up about how his defeat in the 2023 general election prompted him to seek God’s guidance and reassess his life’s direction.

The 45-year-old shared his experience in a recent Instagram post commemorating his first anniversary with Union Church, where he serves as an associate pastor.

Banky W said losing the election was heartbreaking but ultimately created an opportunity for reflection and a fresh understanding of his purpose.

“The election didn’t go the way I hoped. But God’s plans for my life are bigger than the plans I had for myself,” he said.

“And the beautiful thing is, He’s still writing.”

The singer explained that following the electoral setback, he struggled to determine his next move, weighing whether to concentrate on politics, entertainment, business or ministry.

However, he said he eventually realised that he did not have to abandon one pursuit to embrace another.

“It wasn’t either/or. It was all of the above,” he said.

“Turns out, God wasn’t trying to put me in a box. He was expanding my assignment.”

Banky W disclosed that, in addition to serving as an associate pastor at Union Church, he also works as a teacher and leader at Union College.

He acknowledged that travelling between Lagos and the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia area to fulfil his responsibilities can be challenging but described the experience as rewarding.

In 2024, Banky W relocated to the United States with his family to further his studies in public administration. He identified family, faith and the search for purpose as key reasons behind the move.

In the 2023 general election, he contested the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in Lagos State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost to Thaddeus Attah of the Labour Party.

Beyond music and politics, Banky W co-founded Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) in 2002 with his friend Tunde Demuren. The label was home to artistes including Wizkid, Niyola, Shaydee and Skales.

He married actress Adesua Etomi in South Africa in November 2017. The couple welcomed their first child, Hazaiah, in 2021 and their second child, Hezekiah, in 2024.
