BAUCHI COMMUNITY LEADER KILLED IN SHOOTING, SUSPECT ARRESTED

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Clement Anthony, over the alleged killing of a community leader in Bauchi metropolis and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the attack.

Police said the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, with officers recovering a locally made single-barrel gun and one spent cartridge in his possession.

The victim, Jacob Bature, 55, who served as the Mai Anguwa of Unguwar Ngas in the Inkil area of Bauchi Local Government Area, was allegedly shot on Sunday evening.

According to the command, the incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on July 19, when Anthony allegedly armed himself with the locally made firearm and shot the community leader.

Bature sustained serious gunshot injuries to his right rib area and collapsed at the scene.

The attack was reported to the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station by a resident at about 8:30 p.m., prompting officers to swiftly respond.

The injured community leader was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.

His body has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue pending an autopsy.

The police said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while the suspect will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the killing and assured residents that the command would ensure the suspect is brought to justice.

He reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to combating violent crimes and warned against the illegal possession of firearms.

The commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
