The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed remarks by Governor Abba Yusuf concerning the party’s decision not to participate in the recently concluded Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election.

The media had reported that Governor Yusuf, through his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, suggested that the NDC’s absence from the contest indicated an inevitable victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Responding to the comments, Kano NDC Chairman, Hussaini Isa Mai Riga, said the party remains focused on its long-term political objectives and would not be distracted by statements aimed at gaining political advantage.

According to him, the NDC is currently concentrating on strengthening its grassroots presence across Kano State’s 44 local government areas as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.

“The NDC is guided by strategy and discipline. Choosing not to contest a single bye-election should not be mistaken for weakness. Rather, it reflects our commitment to a broader political vision. Our goal is to deepen our grassroots support, strengthen party unity, and field credible candidates capable of earning the trust of Kano voters in 2027,” he said in a statement issued by his media aide, Adam Said Adam.

Mai Riga noted that the party’s decision was informed by lessons from Kano’s political history and a desire to channel resources into activities that align with its long-term goals. He said the NDC would prioritise mobilisation, political awareness, and policy initiatives designed to tackle unemployment, insecurity, and economic challenges affecting citizens.

The party chairman also expressed optimism that the NDC, with the backing of Kano residents and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement within the party, would be well-positioned to secure victory in the next governorship election.

He urged party supporters to remain peaceful, avoid provocation, and continue participating in lawful political activities. He also called on security agencies to maintain neutrality and ensure a fair and transparent political environment as preparations for future elections gather momentum.

The Kano NDC chapter reaffirmed its dedication to democratic principles, issue-driven politics, and the pursuit of good governance for the people of the state.
