DELTA ASSEMBLY WARNS POLITICIANS AGAINST VIOLENCE AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The Delta State House of Assembly has cautioned politicians, supporters and other stakeholders against violence and inflammatory conduct as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker of the House, Guwor Dennis, gave the warning on Wednesday while addressing lawmakers as the Assembly resumed plenary after its 2026 annual recess.
Guwor urged political actors to make the forthcoming elections a contest of ideas, competence, character and service rather than one driven by bitterness, personal attacks and division.
He noted that campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections had commenced on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on September 9.
The Speaker urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral process and avoid treating elections as a do-or-die affair.
According to him, candidates should focus on presenting programmes and policies capable of improving the lives of residents rather than engaging in activities capable of disrupting peace in the state.
Guwor also highlighted the planned increase in Delta State’s State Constituencies from 29 to 38, describing the development as a significant milestone ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the creation of nine additional constituencies would provide more communities with direct representation in the House and strengthen grassroots participation in governance.
“Representation remains at the heart of democracy,” the Speaker said, describing the expansion as historic for Delta State.
Following the resumption of legislative activities, Guwor charged lawmakers to return with renewed commitment and ensure that pending Bills, Motions and Petitions receive prompt attention.
He also urged committee chairmen and members to apply lessons from their leadership training at the London Business School to their legislative duties.
The Speaker reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to effective legislation, oversight and quality representation as part of efforts to support the development of Delta State.
He commended the Delta State Government for organising the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit during the legislative recess, saying the event provided an avenue to showcase the state’s investment opportunities to investors from Nigeria and abroad.
Guwor assured prospective investors that the Assembly would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing to create an enabling environment for businesses and economic growth.
He also congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation.
The Speaker expressed gratitude for the safety of lawmakers and their families during the recess and welcomed members back to the chamber.
He urged lawmakers to immediately resume legislative business, stressing that the remaining part of the legislative calendar required greater dedication to meet the expectations of their constituents.
