EBOLA OUTBREAK: LAGOS ASSESSES MAINLAND HOSPITAL’S EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Lagos State Government has assessed the Infectious Disease Hospital, popularly known as Mainland Hospital, Yaba, as part of efforts to strengthen its preparedness and operational capacity in the event of an Ebola Virus Disease outbreak.
The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, saying the assessment was carried out as the Ministry of Health prepares for possible health emergencies.
Abayomi said the strategic assessment focused on critical infrastructure, diagnostic facilities and clinical support systems required for rapid response and containment of high-consequence diseases.
According to him, the exercise was conducted alongside the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Adejumo, and other key members of staff.
He said the team inspected the Emergency Operations Centre, laboratory equipment, oxygen supply infrastructure, triage and isolation areas, as well as ongoing external works, to ensure that the facility was fully functional and capable of handling a surge in patients.
The commissioner said immediate maintenance needs were identified in several areas, including the Emergency Operations Centre, biobank, pharmacy, catering facilities and drainage networks.
He explained that addressing the identified gaps would help maintain high standards of biosafety and patient care while improving the hospital’s ability to respond effectively to a potential outbreak.
Abayomi said the assessment was prompted by the ongoing Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, stressing that Lagos was taking proactive steps to strengthen its health security architecture.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining maximum operational readiness and safeguarding public health against emerging and high-consequence infectious diseases.
