POLICE: BORNO COMMISSIONER, FADAHUNSI UNDER INVESTIGATION OVER ALLEGED INCITING COMMENTS

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced investigations into alleged inciting remarks made by the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba; Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Danjuma Shekwolo; and Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East.
The Force also disclosed that 154 people arrested during the August 15 Osun State governorship election remained under investigation.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, disclosed this on Tuesday during a joint security spokespersons’ briefing in Abuja.
Iniedu said inciting statements, particularly those capable of influencing or disrupting the electoral process, constituted a criminal offence and would be investigated regardless of the status of those involved.
He said the police had already questioned Fadahunsi over alleged threats directed at members of the Accord Party, adding that investigations into the statements attributed to the three political actors were ongoing.
According to him, the police would not shy away from its responsibility to maintain law and order, irrespective of the individuals involved.
He said, “Every inciting statement listed here is under investigation presently, and the outcome will be released. We want to also use this opportunity to advise and caution all political stakeholders to desist from such comments.”
The development followed controversial remarks allegedly made by Buba, who reportedly threatened to flog residents who refused to support the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general election.
Shekwolo was also alleged to have warned residents of Kuje Area Council to either vote for the APC in 2027 or leave the council.
Fadahunsi, meanwhile, was captured in a video allegedly threatening members of the Accord Party.
On the Osun governorship election, the police spokesman confirmed that 154 suspects arrested as of the morning of the poll were still being investigated.
Iniedu appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators by providing statements and evidence required to prosecute suspected offenders.
He identified the reluctance of witnesses to come forward as one of the major challenges affecting criminal prosecution, urging people with relevant information to approach the police without fear.
The Force also defended its use of force against protesting pensioners in Lagos, stating that while retirees had the right to demand their entitlements, such demands must be made within the confines of the law.
Iniedu said the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, had twice invited the pensioners to his office and advised them on lawful channels for presenting their grievances.
He noted that some previous demonstrations had allegedly resulted in breaches of public order, including the reported invasion of the Presidential Villa premises in Abuja and the blockage of major highways in the Federal Capital Territory.
The police spokesman said the law permitted the Force to use proportionate force to disperse riotous gatherings when necessary.
He, however, appealed to the pensioners to continue their agitation peacefully, assuring them that the police leadership remained supportive of their lawful complaints and representations.
