Members of the Edo State Consumer Protection Committee, led by its Chairman, Osaro Culture Iyamu, were attacked on Thursday by some beverage sellers while enforcing a ban on the sale of fake, adulterated and unauthorised drinks along Mission Road in Benin City.
The committee members were carrying out a routine inspection in the area when they reportedly noticed some sellers hurriedly removing cartons, bottles and cans of drinks from their shelves upon sighting the enforcement team.
The sellers subsequently became hostile and prevented the committee members from gaining access to their shops to verify the authenticity of the products on display.
Following the incident, security agencies invited beverage sellers, including members of the Beverages and Alcohol Dealers Association, to a meeting to address the confrontation.
Speaking on the development, Iyamu alleged that the committee had been under pressure to compromise its responsibilities but vowed not to abandon its mandate of eliminating fake and adulterated products from markets across the state.
He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to protecting consumers, saying, “We will continue to safeguard the health and protect the rights of consumers in line with the SHINE Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo.”
