EL-RUFAI FACING CONSEQUENCES OF HIS TIME IN OFFICE – SHEHU SANI

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has said the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, should be considered in the context of his administration’s record, alleging that several people were arrested and detained during his tenure.
Sani acknowledged the difficulties associated with prolonged detention but argued that El-Rufai was now facing consequences linked to decisions made while he was governor.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Sani said public officials should always remember that political power is temporary.
“When you are in office, always remind yourself that it is an opportunity and it is a very temporary opportunity for you,” he said.

Sani further alleged that El-Rufai’s administration was characterised by what he described as misgovernance, irresponsible leadership and the use of state institutions against political opponents.
“El-Rufai is paying the price for his misgovernance and his irresponsibility when he was in public office,” he added.
The former senator said he understood the difficulties of detention, noting that he had personally spent more than four years in prison during his time as a pro-democracy activist.
He also said it was natural for individuals to lose relationships and support when they were no longer in positions of influence.
“I think he is in detention for, like they say, 200 days or something like that. For someone like me, who has been in prison for four years, I don’t think anyone can lecture me on detention, on the pains of imprisonment,” he said.
Sani also criticised the security measures adopted during El-Rufai’s tenure, particularly in relation to violence in Southern Kaduna. He argued that the state government did not do enough to support security agencies in addressing the insecurity.
He further alleged that the Kaduna State Government had negotiated with bandits during El-Rufai’s administration, citing previous reports and statements attributed to the former governor.
Sani said the experience of former officeholders should serve as a reminder that public positions are temporary and that decisions made while in power may later come under scrutiny.
