EPL: TOTTENHAM END GOAL DROUGHT BUT LOSE 3-2 TO ASTON VILLA

Tottenham Hotspur ended their Premier League scoring drought but suffered another defeat on Saturday as Aston Villa secured a thrilling 3-2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The defeat leaves Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a league win after five matches, with two draws and three defeats. Spurs remain 18th in the table with two points as the international break begins.
Villa, meanwhile, moved up to 15th with four points after recording their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season under Unai Emery.

Tottenham entered the match without scoring in their opening four league games, but their goal drought finally ended after Villa had established a three-goal lead.
Johan Manzambi gave Villa the lead in first-half stoppage time before Nicolas Jackson doubled the advantage in the 67th minute.
Emiliano Buendia appeared to put the result beyond doubt when he made it 3-0 in the 79th minute.
Tottenham, however, mounted a late comeback as Conor Gallagher pulled one back in the 86th minute before Jan Paul van Hecke headed home in the eighth minute of stoppage time to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
Spurs pushed for a dramatic equaliser in the closing moments, but Villa held on to claim their first Premier League win of the season.
The result extends Tottenham’s difficult start under De Zerbi, who took charge with the task of rebuilding a team that narrowly avoided relegation last season.
Spurs began the campaign with defeats to Brentford and Newcastle before recording consecutive goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Everton. They also suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup during the week.
For Emery, the victory provides a major boost after Villa collected just one point from their opening four league matches, losing to Brighton, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest and drawing with Hull City.
Saturday’s result moved Villa to 15th with four points from five matches, comprising one win, one draw and three defeats.
Despite Tottenham’s late pressure, Villa’s counter-attacking approach proved effective. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made five saves as the visitors withstood a sustained assault from Spurs.
Tottenham enjoyed 64 per cent possession and won 11 corners compared with Villa’s one, but were unable to convert their territorial dominance into a point.
The 16-day international break now gives both managers an opportunity to regroup, with Tottenham looking to move away from the relegation zone while Villa aim to build momentum from their first league victory.
