FCT RESIDENTS LAMENT SOARING COOKING GAS PRICES
Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have voiced concern over a sharp increase in cooking gas prices, warning that the surge is putting significant pressure on household budgets.
Reports indicate that the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has risen from an average of ₦1,000 per kilogram to nearly ₦2,000 per kilogram in some areas. The sudden hike has left many residents struggling to cope, especially households in low- and middle-income brackets.
A resident of Garki said, “Cooking gas was once affordable, but now it is becoming a luxury. We are even considering alternatives like firewood, which is not only inconvenient but also harmful to the environment.”
Analysts attribute the price increase to a combination of global oil price fluctuations, supply chain disruptions, and rising domestic demand. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had earlier assured the public that industrial actions would not affect LPG prices, but consumers continue to feel the financial impact.
Energy experts are urging the government and industry stakeholders to stabilize the LPG market and address the factors driving the volatility. They say coordinated action is necessary to ensure cooking gas remains accessible and affordable for Nigerians.
As the situation persists, residents are appealing for prompt interventions that will ease the burden and restore stability to cooking gas pricing in Abuja.
