SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN SEEKS DISMISSAL OF FEDERAL CHARGES AT ABUJA COURT
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has filed a motion at the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking the dismissal of a six-count charge brought against her by the Federal Government.
The charges relate to alleged defamatory statements she made concerning Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
In her motion, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan contends that the prosecution is an abuse of prosecutorial power, a violation of due process, and an attempt to shield the political figures from public scrutiny. Her legal team argues that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) acted contrary to Section 174(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates that the AGF must act in the public interest, uphold justice, and prevent abuse of legal process.
“The charges serve no public purpose and amount to a gross abuse of legal authority,” the senator’s affidavit states.
Supporting her claim, she attached several newspaper publications as public records to demonstrate the veracity of her statements and assert that the prosecution stems from personal and political rivalry, offering no benefit to the Nigerian public.
The case, originally filed on May 22, 2025, is described by her legal team as a misuse of public resources intended to settle personal scores and protect individuals with questionable reputations from criticism.
The court is yet to rule on the motion to dismiss, and legal observers are closely monitoring developments in the high-profile case.
