FORMER SGF BABACHIR LAWAL JOINS NDC, BACKS OBI-KWANKWASO TICKET

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Lawal’s move followed a meeting with the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, at the senator’s residence in Abuja on Tuesday.
The former SGF is expected to support the presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who are running on the NDC platform for the 2027 election.
Lawal had earlier resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in June following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
In his resignation statement, Lawal alleged that the ADC presidential primary had been manipulated in favour of Atiku. Atiku’s camp, however, rejected the allegation and maintained that his emergence reflected the outcome of the party’s primary election.
The former SGF had previously expressed support for an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance, saying he would back the duo if they returned to active presidential politics.
His latest defection adds to the political realignments taking place among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The NDC is currently putting structures in place for its campaign, including consultations over the composition of its Presidential Campaign Council.
