The League of Imams and Alfas in Yoruba Land has warned against the unauthorised conferment and use of Islamic chieftaincy titles associated with the organisation.
The League made its position known in an official disclaimer dated September 24, 2026, in which it also released a list of current and past holders of some of its recognised Islamic titles.
According to the organisation, the titles have historically been awarded to Muslims who have demonstrated outstanding service, commitment, sacrifice and contributions to Islam and the welfare of the Muslim community in Yoruba Land.
Current title holders
The League listed the following as current holders of its distinguished Islamic chieftaincy titles:
- Ambassador Sharafa Tunji Ishola (OFR) — Baba Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola D-Darmak — Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land
- Asiwaju (Dr.) Khamis Olatunde Badmus — Asiwaju Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaja Sekinat Adekola — Iya Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaja Chief Sedeekat Bolade Aderibigbe — Iyalode Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaji Mustapha AbdulRahman Abiola Zico — Borokinni Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaji AbdulRasheed Olawoore Omo Oku-Orun — Seriki Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaji AbdulGaniy Alaka — Giwa Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Alhaji Moriwiyu Kayode Bakare — Balogun Adinni of Yoruba Land
- Olori Agba Moriliat Iyabode Adetona — Asiwaju Obinrin Adinni of Yoruba Land
Abiola, Arisekola among past holders
The League identified the late businessman and philanthropist, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola, as a former holder of the Baba Adinni of Yoruba Land title.
It said historical records indicated that Abiola received the title in the 1980s from clerics associated with the League. Following his death, the title was subsequently conferred on Ambassador Sharafa Tunji Ishola.
The organisation also named the late businessman AbdulAzeez Arisekola Alao as the first holder of the Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land title, stating that he was installed in 1980. The title is currently held by Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola D-Darmak.
The League further identified the late AbdulYekinni Adeojo as a former Seriki Adinni of Yoruba Land.
It also listed the late Sheikh Akinola Garuba, OON, former Vice President of the League and Grand Chief Imam of Lagos, among prominent past Islamic leaders associated with the organisation.
The League said the continued succession of the titles reflected their place within its established heritage and institutional traditions.
It therefore cautioned individuals against duplicating, misrepresenting or publicly presenting titles as having been conferred by the League when they were not.
The organisation said the clarification was necessary to protect the integrity of its established Islamic chieftaincy titles and prevent unauthorised claims.
