The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Ikechukwu Dozie, has warned the public about a fake Facebook account allegedly using his name and photograph.
The university also urged members of the public to avoid engaging with the account and to report it to Facebook immediately.
FUTO’s Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Owerri, Imo State.
Ezugwu said the Vice-Chancellor does not operate any personal Facebook account, stressing that any account claiming to belong to him is fraudulent and has no connection with the university management.
He warned members of the public against responding to messages from the fake account or sending money, gifts or personal information to its operators.
“The public is, accordingly, advised to beware of fraudsters using fake accounts to scam unsuspecting individuals,” the statement said.
The university further urged anyone who encounters similar accounts to report them to Facebook and notify the institution.
The warning comes amid the university’s ongoing admission process, with prospective students awaiting the release of the next admission list.
