‘I WILL CURSE ANY CHILD THAT KEEPS HIS/HER MOTHER FOR 1 MONTH WITHOUT MY APPROVAL’ – NIGERIAN BUSINESSMAN VOWS

‘I intend to go to my hometown, Offa, God-willing and learn how to make “afoshe ti ogbona ni tori a won iyawo alaigboran (powerful commanding-charm for any disobedient wife)”’ That was the submission of a nigerian businessman, simply identified as ‘Femi’, who believed sending children abroad for education is ‘evil in disguise’.

Sharing his experience with hotjist.com, the businessman who does not want his identity revealed, advised middle-class men to desist from running overseas for either a permanent stay or educating their children due to peer pressure.

The man his 40’s who also posited that he would never take his children to any school that will encourage them to travel abroad, narrated an incident that shapened his outright decision;

“…a retired elderly doctor I met in 2009 while working at a popular eatery, at Ikota Villa.

This baba was an elderly retired doctor, he lived in Ikota area, very cerebral, kind and wealthy. In the name of feeling among, he sent all his children to the best schools abroad, they all stayed back to work there.

The wife barely spends a month in Nigeria; from Canada to USA to London all year round. The man had a cook and househelp, the cook and househelp connived to steal a lot of money from him, money meant to buy some artwork from Nike Gallery in Lekki, the man got angry and sacked them. May God bless his soul, very nice man, he did not arrest them, he only told them to go.

He decided he will be doing his cooking by himself and get people to clean up for him once in awhile. He goes to the market himself almost every day as a way of killing boredom. He had a private zoo with some monkeys and parrots, I knew him when he wanted to do some renovation jobs in his house and we got close, he even got closer to one of my iron-benders that almost became like a son to him( he was blessed with four biological sons), this iron-bender leaves his house in Ikorodu just to spend time with baba any time he had the chance. People new the iron-bender as a relative of baba in the estate.

One day, this bender could not get to baba on phone to chat which had became a routine for both them, very unlike, baba, baba gists with him almost on a daily basis. It had been two days, on the third day he went to the estate to see baba in person, the gate was locked from inside, he asked Aboki at the street’s gate whether he saw baba traveled, Aboki said no. He was worried, called the people around who in turn called the LCDA chairman, they called the police at Ajiwe and broke the gate. Alas! Baba has been dead at least for 3 days! He was not sick, probably died of natural causes, big houseflies filled the room. No wife, child or relative around.

Next page, how do they contact Baba’s real relatives? Due to oyinbo lifestyle, relatives do not visit baba, people in the area thought my iron-bender was a relative. It was my iron-bender that told them baba loves going to Nike Art Gallery, Lekki and they had been there together a couple of times; baba had longtime friends there, they should go ask around there. It was from Nike Art Gallery that they got baba’s family members contact in abroad.

The friends took care of the corpse and paid for mortuary. Now the worst: it took baba’s wife and children three weeks to come down to see his corpse in Nigeria. My iron-bender became the “real omo oloku”, cleaning up the house and giving it a facelift in readiness for a befitting burial.

Baba must be buried in style in Lagos, the wife and children can not go to the village because they do not have a good relationship with baba’s family. They only called his younger sister to inform the village people. What a waste of a good life?

I vowed never to join the craze of relocating abroad or sending any child abroad for education until masters degree from that incident. I also vowed to place a cause on any child that keeps his/ her mother for one month in a stretch without my express happy approval. I intend to retire in my hometown of Offa God-willing and learn how to make “afoshe ti ogbona ni tori a won iyawo alaigboran””
