KADUNA VARSITY UNIONS DEMAND IMPLEMENTATION OF 2026 FG AGREEMENT

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Kaduna State University chapter, has called for the immediate implementation of the 2026 Federal Government agreement with non-teaching staff of public universities.
The unions also urged the Kaduna State Government to settle outstanding earned allowances, promotion and pension arrears, wage awards, as well as the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases applicable to university workers.
The demands were contained in a communiqué issued on Tuesday following a meeting at the unions’ secretariat at Kaduna State University.
The JAC said implementing agreements reached between government and recognised university unions was crucial to sustaining industrial peace and preventing further disputes in the university system.
It therefore appealed to the Kaduna State Government and KASU management to urgently implement the provisions of the 2026 agreement applicable to workers of the institution.
The unions also demanded payment of outstanding earned allowances, particularly excess workload allowance, promotion arrears, group life insurance benefits, pension arrears, salary increments and outstanding wage awards.
The JAC further called for increased funding for KASU, warning that inadequate financial support could undermine teaching, research, innovation and accreditation.
According to the unions, improved funding would enable the university to maintain infrastructure, support research and technological development, enhance staff welfare, meet accreditation requirements and provide adequate teaching and learning facilities.
They also advocated greater administrative, financial and academic autonomy for the institution, saying this would promote efficiency, accountability, transparency and academic excellence.
The unions expressed concern over the ongoing industrial dispute between a sister union at the university and the Kaduna State Government, urging Governor Uba Sani, who is also the Visitor to KASU, and other stakeholders to resolve the matter amicably and promptly.
They warned that failure to address the dispute could affect students, parents and staff and potentially lead to further industrial action by other unions.
The JAC maintained that consistent implementation of agreements reached with university-based unions was necessary to build trust and guarantee industrial stability.
It, however, commended the Kaduna State Government for responding positively to some of its demands, while urging the government to sustain dialogue with the unions and resolve all outstanding issues.
The unions also appealed to their members to remain united and calm, assuring them that their leadership would continue to pursue their legitimate interests through dialogue with the government and university management.
