The Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all second-semester examinations and socio-academic activities for the 2024/2025 academic session until further notice, following an ongoing industrial action by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the institution’s staff unions.

This decision was reached during a virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, where the Senate reviewed the status of the strike declared by the LASU chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) on July 31.

According to a statement signed by Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the Senate noted that the core demands of the striking unions were directed at the Lagos State Government.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, informed the Senate that the University Management had been engaging in dialogue with both the unions and the state government.

Notably, a tripartite meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, at Alausa, Ikeja.

It was resolved at the meeting that further consultations would take place, with a follow-up session scheduled for Thursday, August 7.

In light of the unresolved issues, the Senate resolved to suspend the examinations initially scheduled to begin Monday, August 4, and directed that all academic and social activities be halted immediately.

Additionally, students residing in hostels across the university’s Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses are required to vacate the premises no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.

Students and other members of the university community have been advised to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation unfolds.

“We are LASU, we are great!” the statement concluded.
