Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman scored as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, deepening the pressure on United manager Michael Carrick.
The defeat adds to Carrick’s difficult start as the club’s permanent manager, with the Red Devils struggling to find their footing in the competition.
Atletico Madrid took an early lead when Pablo Barrios found the net in the opening minute, putting the hosts in control of the encounter.
Lookman, who came on as a second-half substitute, doubled Atletico’s advantage in the 79th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound to tap the ball into the net and seal the victory.
The result marked Atletico Madrid’s first win in the Champions League campaign under Diego Simeone, moving the Spanish side to 13th place in the league-phase standings.
