Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has refused to comment extensively on Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club’s leadership following their defeat to Atletico Madrid, saying he wants to establish the facts before deciding how to respond.

Martinez criticised United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, during a post-match interview with Amazon Prime on Tuesday, accusing the club of failing to provide sufficient investment in the squad during the summer transfer window.

The defender argued that Carrick should not be held responsible for the team’s disappointing start to the season, insisting that the manager had not received adequate support from the club’s hierarchy.

United have recorded just two victories in nine matches across all competitions this season, raising questions about their performances and transfer recruitment strategy.

Wilcox and Chief Executive Officer Omar Berrada reportedly spent £155m on new first-team players during the summer, signing goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielders Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans.

However, Martinez believes the club’s recruitment efforts were insufficient to build on the team’s achievements last season. He also called for greater scrutiny of those responsible for United’s football operations.

When asked after Tuesday’s match whether he would speak to Martinez about the interview, Carrick said he needed to understand the situation before determining his next step.

“I need to find out a bit more about it before I can say if and what is going to be done. I really can’t comment any further because I haven’t seen it,” he said.

Carrick was also questioned about whether he agreed with Martinez’s assertion that the club had failed to provide sufficient backing in the transfer market.

The United manager declined to take a position, explaining that he had not watched the interview. He also suggested that the defender’s remarks might have been influenced by the disappointment of the result.

“I haven’t seen the interview; I’ve heard about it as the interview was done, but I think it’s a little bit on the emotions of the game as well,” Carrick said.

He added that immediately after a match was not the appropriate time to discuss the interview, particularly as he had not seen it himself.

Carrick, however, stressed the importance of moving on quickly and maintaining focus ahead of United’s next fixture on Sunday.

“There is a big game on Sunday, and it’s really important that we move forward and we stay focused on that. There’s disappointment within the group. I’m very disappointed in certain things, and the boys are as well,” he said.

Despite United’s struggles, Carrick maintained that the players remained united and committed to improving the team’s results.

He acknowledged the frustration surrounding the club’s poor run but said he had no doubts about the squad’s togetherness, determination or willingness to compete.

“I don’t doubt the togetherness or the wanting to win or the willingness to do things to win. I really don’t doubt that,” he said.

Carrick added that while United’s results had understandably raised concerns, the team’s failure to win enough matches did not necessarily indicate deeper problems within the squad.
