Kylian Mbappe was the star of the match with a decisive penalty goal as Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 1-0 in their opening league match on Tuesday, securing a winning start for new coach Xabi Alonso.

The French striker, last season’s European Golden Shoe winner, converted from the spot six minutes into the second half after being fouled by defender Juan Cruz.

The victory extended Madrid’s remarkable run of remaining unbeaten in La Liga openers since 2008, as they began a new era following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

Summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold made his league debut alongside Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras, while Madrid were without injured midfielder Jude Bellingham, sidelined until October after shoulder surgery.

Osasuna kept the hosts at bay for much of the match, with goalkeeper Sergio Herrera producing key saves from Huijsen and Eder Militao. But Mbappe’s composure from the spot proved enough, as Madrid closed out the game comfortably.

Teenage winger Franco Mastantuono also made his debut late on, while Osasuna’s hopes of salvaging a point ended when Abel Bretones was sent off in stoppage time.
