Manchester United’s newest signing, Bryan Mbeumo, has sparked debate after naming his top three current African footballers notably excluding Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

In an interview with former England defender Rio Ferdinand, the 25-year-old Cameroon international selected Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, and PSG’s Achraf Hakimi as his picks for Africa’s finest at the moment.

“For now, Salah, Lookman, and Achraf Hakimi. He’s the best right back in the world,” Mbeumo said.

The winger, who joined United after five seasons with Brentford, where he netted 20 goals and provided eight assists in the 2024/25 Premier League season, also revealed his all-time African football idols.

“Of course, I looked up to Eto’o. He’s a striker as well. He was scoring goals, and that was what I wanted to do when I was young,” Mbeumo said, naming Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba, and Yaya Toure as his top three African legends.

Lookman’s inclusion comes after a stellar year in which he won the UEFA Europa League with Atalanta and reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria  feats that earned him the 2024 African Player of the Year award.

Mbeumo, who switched international allegiance from France to Cameroon in 2022, has scored six goals in 22 appearances for the Indomitable Lions.
