Daniel Umemezie has been selected as the 2026–2027 US National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th young poet to receive the prestigious honour and the second Nigerian-American to hold the title.
Umemezie succeeds Salome Agbaroji, who made history in 2023 as the first Nigerian-American to be named US National Youth Poet Laureate.
A talented Nigerian-American poet, Umemezie draws inspiration from his heritage, identity and experiences navigating life between Nigerian and American cultures.
His poetry explores themes of culture, belonging and identity, while reflecting the realities and complexities of growing up between two worlds.
