A 13-year-old boy has died and several others were injured after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph, local authorities and media reports said on Monday.
The incident occurred in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain, where large crowds had gathered to celebrate the country’s first World Cup title since 2010.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Council expressed condolences to the family of the deceased teenager, describing the tragedy as a heartbreaking turn during what was meant to be a joyful celebration.
“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s national team’s World Cup victory turned into tragedy,” the municipality said, confirming that several other people sustained injuries.
Emergency services said they received multiple distress calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time, reporting that a fountain had collapsed onto a crowd. They added that another young person was among those injured.
According to local media, the structure gave way after numerous fans climbed onto it to celebrate Spain’s victory.
Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina sparked jubilant scenes across the country, with thousands of supporters filling streets, public squares and landmarks to celebrate the nation’s first FIFA World Cup title in 16 years.
Authorities have repeatedly cautioned fans against climbing monuments and other public structures during mass celebrations, warning that such actions can result in serious accidents.
