POLICE ARREST 1,198 SUSPECTS, RESCUE 166 KIDNAP VICTIMS IN TWO WEEKS, SAYS IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has disclosed that nationwide anti-crime operations conducted between June 9 and June 21, 2026, led to the arrest of 1,198 suspects for various offences across the country.
Disu made the disclosure on Tuesday during the monthly conference with strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force held in Abuja.
According to the IGP, the arrests included 151 suspects for murder and culpable homicide, 117 for armed robbery, 151 for kidnapping, 104 suspected cultists and 169 persons arrested for unlawful possession of firearms.
He added that police operatives also rescued 166 kidnapped victims during the period.
“Since June 9, 2026, anti-crime operations across the federation have led to the arrest of 1,198 suspects for various offences,” Disu said.
The police chief further revealed that the operations resulted in the recovery of 166 assorted firearms, 1,475 rounds of ammunition of different calibres and 47 stolen vehicles.
He commended police personnel involved in the operations, noting that the successes were achieved through professionalism, dedication and personal sacrifice.
Highlighting recent achievements, the IGP cited the rescue of abducted students and teachers in Oyo State as a model of effective collaboration among security agencies.
He said the operation succeeded through close cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, other security and intelligence agencies, as well as members of the public who provided credible information.
Disu, however, cautioned officers against complacency, stressing that recent successes should strengthen, rather than weaken, their commitment to tackling crime.
“A win like this should sharpen our resolve, not soften it. We cannot let a success like Oyo breed complacency. Every achievement should push us to improve further, not to relax,” he said.
The IGP also directed Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police to adopt intelligence-driven policing strategies tailored to the peculiar security challenges within their commands.
He stressed that the effectiveness of police operations would be measured by security outcomes rather than the number of operations conducted.
Disu further instructed all commands to conduct post-operation reviews to improve future tactical planning and operational efficiency.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information capable of preventing crime.
“Lasting security depends on genuine partnership between the police and the communities we serve. I encourage every Nigerian to stay alert and continue reporting suspicious activities. Every piece of information matters. If you see something, say something,” he said.
