POLICE ARREST SUSPECT AS NURTW CLASH LEAVES THREE SECURITY OPERATIVES SHOT IN OSUN

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a suspected hoodlum following a violent clash between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Osogbo that left three security operatives with gunshot injuries.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the command’s recent operational successes.
According to Gotan, the crisis began on July 20 when a faction of the NURTW staged a protest, alleging that its members were denied access to a motor park in Osogbo by the dominant faction.
The protest later escalated into a clash between the rival groups before police operatives intervened to restore normalcy.
However, the situation worsened later that evening after armed hoodlums reportedly invaded the Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo, shooting sporadically.
The police commissioner said operatives of the Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit responded immediately to a distress call but came under attack from the armed suspects.
“The hoodlums, suspected to be members of the faction led by one Wakili Alowonle, opened fire on the police operatives, leaving three security personnel with varying degrees of gunshot injuries. They are currently responding to treatment,” Gotan said.
He disclosed that one suspect, identified as 40-year-old Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, was arrested during the operation.
According to the commissioner, the suspect confessed that he was invited to the scene by an associate, identified as Sibi, after receiving instructions from Alowonle.
He also allegedly admitted that Sibi handed him one of two pump-action guns before the confrontation.
Gotan said the suspect is assisting investigators in tracking down other members of the group still at large.
Items recovered from the scene included six expended cartridges, four vehicles, four motorcycles, military camouflage and suspected criminal charms.
The police commissioner also announced the arrest of three suspected motorcycle robbers identified as Kamarudeen Babatunde, 39; Lekan Usman, 22; and Moses Oyebade, 40.
He said the arrests followed the theft of a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number MEK 987 VU at Osunjela, Osogbo, on July 19.
Acting on intelligence, police operatives traced the stolen motorcycle to Modakeke, where it was recovered and the suspects arrested alongside an alleged receiver from Ondo Town, Ondo State.
In a separate operation, the command arrested two suspected political thugs, Alawode Ridwan, 26, and Ajibade Ahmed, 33, for allegedly causing a disturbance around the Amadia area of Osogbo.
Gotan assured residents that all suspects arrested in connection with the various incidents would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
He also urged members of the public to support security agencies with timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and enhance public safety.
