POLICE FOIL BANDITS’ ATTACK, RECOVER 11 RUSTLED CATTLE, ARREST SUSPECTS IN SOKOTO

The Sokoto State Police Command has foiled a bandits’ attack in Tangaza Local Government Area, recovered 11 rustled cattle and arrested several suspects linked to burglary and motorcycle theft in separate operations across the state.
The command said the operations, carried out by personnel of the Tangaza Division, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit and the Strike Force, demonstrated its commitment to tackling banditry and other criminal activities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Rufa’i, said suspected Lakurawa bandits invaded Ayawa village on Monday evening, firing sporadically before rustling 11 cattle.
According to him, police operatives responded swiftly to a distress call, with the Divisional Police Officer leading a combined team that blocked all escape routes out of the community.
The operatives subsequently engaged the fleeing bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to abandon the stolen livestock and escape into a nearby forest.
“The team engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel. Overwhelmed by the superior firepower and tactical positioning of our operatives, the criminals abandoned the stolen cattle and fled into the nearby forest,” Rufa’i said.
He added that all 11 cattle were recovered and returned to their rightful owners.
In a separate operation, the command’s Strike Force arrested four suspects in connection with the burglary of a shop in the Guiwa Low Cost area of Sokoto metropolis.
The case followed a complaint by a trader, Marwanu Akibu, who reported that unknown persons broke into his shop on July 10 and carted away 53 pieces of women’s wrapper materials.
Rufa’i said one of the suspects, Mustapha Danbaba, was arrested during a patrol around the Old Market area and allegedly confessed to the crime.
He said the suspect admitted selling the stolen items to one Abubakar Usman, while two other suspects, Bashar Abubakar and Sa’adu Shehu, allegedly assisted in disposing of the stolen property.
The police also arrested a suspected member of a motorcycle theft syndicate following reports of multiple motorcycle thefts in Gidan Masau.
According to the command, the suspect, Kabiru Abubakar, confessed to conspiring with an accomplice, Ibrahim Muhammad, who remains at large, to steal motorcycles from several communities, including Mana Babba, Nakasari, Bado Quarters, Gidan Kanawa and Tamaje.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that the stolen motorcycles were allegedly sold to two suspected receivers identified as Ahmad of Sabon Titi and Kabiru of the Hausawa area, who are currently being tracked by the police.
Commending the officers involved in the operations, the Commissioner of Police, Hassan Shaffa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to eliminating criminal activities across the state.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to protect lives and property.
