Colombian music star Shakira has revealed why she featured Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup song, Dai Dai.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill, Shakira said she wanted a powerful male voice for the track and believed Burna Boy was the ideal artist because of his distinctive energy and vocal style.

She also disclosed that collaborating with the Nigerian singer had long been one of her goals.

“I have always loved Burna. I was obsessed with getting him on the track, so I called him,” she said.

Shakira praised the collaboration, adding that she could not imagine anyone else performing the part.

Since its release, Dai Dai has achieved several global milestones. The song became the first to top Spotify’s newly launched Global Music Video Chart and propelled Burna Boy to the summit of the Apple Music Global Top Songs chart, making him the first African artist to achieve the feat.

The success of the song also saw Burna Boy set new records as the African artist with the highest monthly listeners on Spotify and YouTube Music, with 53 million and 600 million monthly listeners respectively.

In addition, Burna Boy became the first African artist to perform at the newly introduced FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show.
